Kareena was born to Sindhi-speaking Babita and Punjabi-speaking Randhir Kapoor on 21st September 1980 in Bombay, India.She has an elder sister, Karisma.
She born intoa family that has several generations of actors, including paternal great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor, her grandfather, Raj Kapoor, his paternal uncles, Shammi, Shashi, Rishi and Rajiv and her aunt, Neetu Singh & Jennifer Kendall, the wives of Rishi and Shashi respectively. On the side of the mother, her grandfather, Hari Shivdasani, and aunt, Sadhana are supporting their rights.
As a child she studied at the Jamnabai Narsee School Juhu, Mumbai, then went to prestigious Welham Boarding School, Dehra Dun. Then she joined Harvard for about three months to get a course in information technology and microcomputers. After return to India, she joined the Government Law College, Churchgate, Mumbai, but a year later, she left it to enroll in the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting school.
Her father Randhir is very care of his daughters and wanted to keep away from films to getting married, and the settle down, according to Kapoor family tradition. This led to irreconcilable differences between her parents, which eventually led to divorce, with both sisters leaving their dad to live with her mother.
Her debut film was in 2000 with "refugee", with the debut of Amitabh Bachchan's son Abhishek. Shee went on to appear in 31 other Hindi movies, and so far have four awards for her performance in "Refugee", "Chameli", "Dev" and "Omkara".
